ABOUT THIS BRANDKapua Browning, Founder of Honua Skincare has a family lineage known for protecting the land, water and farmlands of Hawai’i. Growing up, Kapua immersed herself in the study of Hawaiian botanical skincare, becoming a licensed esthetician and instructor. She and her husband Brandon, a Hawaiian Traditional Medicine practitioner, began crafting customized oils and tinctures for their clients using native Hawaiian botanicals. In 2016, they birthed a brand with only one given name: Honua. Through Honua, which means ‘earth’ in Hawaiian, Kapua channels her passion for expert-formulated skincare that incorporates native plants and farming rituals of Hawai’i, while giving back a portion of her profits to three organizations in her homeland: 'Āina Provide, Hoa 'Āina O Mākaha and the Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative.
This is an improved version of the much-loved original Malu formula in my opinion. The former version was so thick (which was wonderful for dry winter skin) that you couldn’t suction out the bottom 1/5 with the pump. It was so frustrating! This new formula has a thinner consistency, but still moisturizes nicely, has a slightly weaker scent (by no means a bad thing, although I loved the original scent so much), and soaks in with no white cast even better than the original. I have yet to reach the bottom of my bottle, so I am not 100% certain the pump problem is fixed, but I have high hopes and think it will no longer be an issue! I will report back if I am wrong.
Hi Elaine, We are so happy to hear that you are loving the new formulation of the Malu Protecting Day Cream. Thank you for sharing!

Hi Elaine, Thank you for this very detailed review of the new Malu formula! We are so happy to hear that you are enjoying it and we appreciate you sharing your experience : )
I loved the original formulation. It was my number one everyday moisturizer. It was super emollient and moisturizing without leaving a white cast. Fantastic for my dry, light-medium skin. They reformulated to remove palm oil and make it more sustainable, which I very much support (save the orangutans!). That said, the new formulation leaves something to be desired. It is a much thinner cream so I have to use another moisturizer underneath. I also find myself using a lot more of this thinner cream product than I did previously with the heavier, more emollient original formulation as I want to be sure I am getting sufficient SPF on my face. It makes me a little dubious that it is still SPF 30 given how lightweight it is and how quickly it seems to disappear, which might actually be a selling point for others lol
Hi Cece, Thank you so much for this honest review. This is a reformulated version of Malu. We love hearing your comparison to the past formula. Malu is made and thoroughly tested for its SPF 30 claim. It definitely needs to pass this test, so we feel confident it is still an SPF 30. We will be sure to pass this feedback to Honua. We also like adding just a drop of face oil to this formula to make it a litte more moisturizing, just as an option. It still smells and performs the same. Thank you again.
This was a nice, hydrating SPF that sunk in well and didn't leave a white cast (at least on my pale skin). It was too strongly scented for my preference, even though I love jasmine. I also did not appreciate the glass packaging. I know everyone is trying to be more eco-friendly so I understand that glass is infinitely recyclable. However there was a least a weeks worth of product still in the bottle after the pump was no longer able to get it out. Opening up the bottle and whacking it against my hand every morning was not how I wanted to put on my sunscreen and has me concerned about introducing bacteria into the product. Overall it was great for a North American sunscreen but the packaging, price and scent means I'm not about to give up my Korean sunscreen anytime soon.
I really wanted to love this, but had to immediately take this off. Stings my skin. Something in it made me red and blotchy after just 30 seconds. Recommend sampling/ testing before buying. Seemed beautiful when I testing it on the back of my hand, but my face just said NO. Took a few days for the redness to go down. Not sure what is in the formula that caused that reaction. Other people seem to love it.
